• After numerous delays by the Sarasota County Building Department in issuing a permit, the repairs on the bridge began in August. In addition to the structural repairs, the contractor replaced the sealant in the expansion joints in the bridge surface and repaired several damaged places on the sidewalk. The job was well done and should give us many years of trouble free use.
• The Spa had several problems including weak therapy jets and a suction drain, which was in violation of the Virginia Graeme Baker Act. This violation needed to be corrected by January 1, 2011. The project required complete replacement of almost all of the piping, the installation of a collector tank and total replacement of the therapy jet system.
• The swimming pool surface was forming blisters over the past year and was wearing off both in the gutters as well as on the bottom. In June, the pool was emptied and the old surface was sanded, prepped and a new surface was applied. The tiles on the steps and on the bottom were replaced with the new non-skid type.
• There has been no news from Sarasota County regarding the purchase of a portion of the 8 acre tract. The Herald Tribune had an article in a recent issue that showed the expected completion date for each phase of the Honore Ave Extension project. The completion date for the final phase of the project, from Hwy. 681 to Laurel Rd., is December 2014.
• I hesitate to mention anything about the sewer plant and the lift stations because there has not been a clogged pump in several weeks. Keep up the good toilet practices!!
• The Solar Bee was installed in late May. No more chemicals have been added to the lake to control algae growth. By early August, the lake was more than 70% covered with algae. Then the rains from several tropical waves arrived and the algae began to diminish. Today, the lake has only about 10% algae coverage. The dissolved oxygen level has risen from 3.8 – 4.6 mg/L to a significantly higher level, 6.6 – 8.4 mg/L. The water clarity has improved dramatically as well. There are patches of weeds growing out from the banks and these are being addressed using an herbicide that is not harmful to aquatic life. All in all, the system seems to be doing what the SolarBee company had said it would.
• Comcast is changing its signal from analog to all digital. The conversion date is now expected to be in mid February. If you still have an analog TV, you will need a digital converter box for each set. Comcast will supply up to three boxes at no cost to the homeowner. They will send every one in the club a letter describing what this means to you and how you can get the boxes.
• The R/O Plant continues to make excellent quality water. We will need to perform some periodic maintenance on well #1 in the next week or so. You should not notice any change in quality or pressure while this is going on. Over the last few weeks, the water plant flow charts have, on a few occasions, shown continuous water usage through the night. This is probably from a running toilet or a hose left on all night. Please make sure nothing like that is happening at your house.
• Finally, someone is disposing of syringes in a 2 liter soda bottle and putting the filled bottles in the hazardous materials area. The syringes and test strips must be disposed of in a special sharps disposal container, which is available in the club office. The filled container may be taken to the Blood Bank at the Publix shopping center at the corner of Laurel Road and US 41. This has been a problem for a year. We have publicized this information over and over again but the right person has not gotten the message.
